Hey, animators and designers! Welcome to another edition of Tutorial Tuesday! Today, we're diving into how to achieve that popular hand-drawn animation style using After Effects. There are different ways to achieve this style; here’s one. And because this is such a long post, we have an After Effects file for you, free to download, so you can explore this quicker. Let's get into it!

Step 1: Apply Roughen Edges

Select Your Layer.
Effect > Stylize > Roughen Edges: Navigate to the Effects panel, select Stylize, and then apply Roughen Edges.
Adjust Settings:
- Edge Type: Choose 'Rough' for a more sketch-like appearance.
- Edge Sharpness: Adjust so it's not too blurry.
- Border: Increase the border to add more texture.
- Scale: Adjust the scale to fine-tune the roughness detail.

Step 2: Use Turbulent Displace

Select Your Layer or Adjustment Layer.
Effect > Distort > Turbulent Displace: Apply the Turbulent Displace effect to the layer.
Adjust Settings:
- Amount: Reduce the amount to around 40 to keep the distortion subtle.
- Size: Set the size to around 2 for finer details.
- Feel free to play around with the numbers and adjust them to your liking; these are just examples.
- Complexity: Adjust the complexity to refine the level of "ink bleeding effect."

Pro Tip:

Direct vs. Adjustment Layer for Turbulent Displace: You can either add the Turbulent Displace effect directly to a specific layer if you want to target just one element, or you can add it to an adjustment layer on top of everything for an overall style across your entire composition.

🎬 Add a Wiggle Effect through Evolution

To create a hand-drawn jitter effect, animate the evolution of the Turbulent Displace effect. Add five keyframes to the Evolution property at random intervals, setting each keyframe to hold. Then, Alt-click (Option-click on Mac) the stopwatch icon next to the Evolution property and enter the expression loopOut("cycle"). This will create a continuous, hand-drawn jitter effect.
